This leg of the tour, from Bucharest to Tulcea, Gateway to the Danube Delta, was an eye-opener. Suddenly, I entered a far more modern farming community than existed to the West. The fields were vast and the farm equipment was completely modern, just like in Germany. There were many lush green areas where the sheep could graze and fatten themselves. The highways were wider and paved smoothly without potholes. Even the Gypsy children were dressed in new modern clothing.

Laici, the friend with whom I stayed in Bucharest, had a small contract east of Bucharest and offered to take me a few miles to avoid the traffic leaving town. So I put everything into his car and off we went. I snapped a few pictures of him on the job and after he took me a few more kilometers, he dropped me off just before the beginning of this beautiful highway on the left.

Highway Chapel

This roadside chapel was the nicest I saw in the country. A lady was watering the flowers as I arrived on the bicycle and unlocked the door so I could go inside. The frescoes were like new and artistically depicted saints admired by the Romanian Christians.

Diese Kapelle an der Strasse war die schönste, die ich in Rumänien gesehen hatte. Als ich ankam, hat eine Dame die Blumen gegossen. Sie hat die Tür für mich aufgeschlossen damit ich hinein gehen konnte. Die Fresken waren wie neu und zeigten die Heiligen, die von den rumänischen Christen angebetet werden.

Tulcea is the “gateway” to the Danube Delta. From Tulcea, boats travel on the three “arms” of the Danube that flow into the Black Sea bringing passengers to and from the towns in the Delta. The best known is the tourist town of Sulina to which the central arm of the river goes.

Tulcea ist das “Tor” zum Donaudelta. Von Tulcea, Boote fahren auf den drei “Armen” der Donau, die zum Schwarzen Meer fliessen. Sie bringen Leute und Güter zu und von den Dörfern im Delta. Die bekannteste von ihnen ist der Turistenort, Sulina. Direkt nach Sulina geht der Zentralarm des Flusses. Auf diesem Kanal fahren die grösseren Schiffe und Passegierboote.

Laici hatte einen kleinen Auftrag nicht weit Richtung Osten von Bukarest. und hat angeboten mich mit zu nehmen, um den Verkehr zu vermeiden der die Stadt verlässt. Super! Ich habe alles in sein auto geworfen und bin mitgefahren. Ein Paar Fotos von ihm habe ich bei der Arbeit aufgenommen, dann brachte er mich noch ein Paar Kilometer weiter. Er hat mich ausgelassen kurz vor dieser neuen modernen Strasse (links).

Occasionally, the Land was Barren

Romanian Kids Followed me Up a Steep Hill

Above, these kids were fascinated with my bike. The girl in pink spoke Spanish - her father married in Spain and brought his wife back with him. The daughter ran to her father, who was selling tomatoes along the roadside and brought me one as a gift. Together, we walked for about a kilometer and talked about what they wanted to do when they grow up.

Die Kinder oben waren fasziniert mit meinem Fahrrad. Das Mädchen in pink konnte Spanisch - ihr Vater hatte in Spanien geheiratet und seine Frau wieder nach Rumänien gebracht. Die Tochter ging zu ihrem Vater, der Tomaten an der Strasse verkaufte, und brachte mir eine Tomate als Geschenk. Zusammen liefen alle Kinder etwa einen Kilometer mit mir neben dem Rad und redeten über was sie werden wollten wenn sie erwachsen sind.
