13-20 May - Week 5

Last Update: 19 September 2010

Zurück zur Hauptseite!

This week, Robert, a friend of mine from Holland, has joined me to ride toward the North Sea, where we are visiting some of the East Frisian Islands.

This is by far the most interesting week of the trip, but also the most expensive. The ferry prices to the islands in the North Sea have risen radically. Therefore, I skipped the Islands that I’ve already visited in the past.

Papenburg Canal

Papenburg

Papenburg is a very interesting city with a large canal running through the center. In Weener, the Torfwiefkes shown in the picture on the right brought the torf for delivery to the ships.

Chemical Factory in Delfzijl, Holland
Chemiefabrik in Delfzijl, Niederlande

Borkum, an island in the North Sea is the final goal for this day. As Robert and I traveled northward, we passed many farm communities and were surprised to find this metal chemical-producing monstrosity in Delfzijl. I consider this kind of production facility a necessary evil - not pretty, but necessary.

Emshaven, Holland; 50 Windmills, all in a row
Emshaven, Niederlande, 50 Windmühlen in einer Reihe

The overabundance of windmills tends to mar the landscape along the coastlines of Holland and Germany. I think Biogas facilities are environmentally more desirable.

Borkum Island, Unloading the Kids on the Beach
Borkum, Kinder am Strand Liefern

Borkum - beautiful beaches, affordable prices for both food and living.

Pabstmobile at the Pabst Hotel on Juist

Juist, Ostfriesische Nordseeinsel - Juist, East Frisian Island, North Sea

Robert and I stayed in a B&B place for the night near the Pabst Hotel. Pabst, the German word for the pope, made this photograph the photo of the day - the Popemobile - that picks up hotel guests when the ships arrive.

Eating Supper on the East End of Juist
Abendessen auf Juists Ostende

We made fried potatoes with mojo sauce. In the far distance, you can see the island of Norderney.

Taxi on the Island of Juist
Taxi auf Juist

Juist - a long romantic island on the North Sea. The main form of transportation on this island is bicycle and horse taxis like this one.

Juist - Westende
West End of Juist

On this very long island, there is plenty of beach for everyone as you can see. Robert and I walked nearly two kilometers on this beach after leaving the grassy part of the island and there was at least another kilometer ahead of us when we decided to walk back. If you like wide open spaces, this is the place to be.

Wangerooge Promenade

Wangerooge - a plain island in my eyes. With very affordable prices for living, this island was interesting from the standpoint that it seems to have stood still and that there are no real modern buildings on the island.

Stranded Ship at Low Tide
Schiff bei Ebbe

The tides here determine whether a ship can sail in certain areas. If you sail too closely to the shore when tide is low, you can plan on spending the next 8-12 hours in the same spot.

Sat

20 May

Cold rainy day - time for a break! I rode with Robert to Wilhelmshaven today where he met his
father-in-law for the ride back home.

No pictures today. There was simply too much rain and a lot of uncomfortable riding back to my tent in Dornumersiel.
