Beach Promenade in Quarteira, Portugal 4 Jan 2008

Someday, I knew I would return to Portugal. Of course, there’s always a reason. After having some difficulty with my lungs, I decided to kill two birds with one stone. The book I began to write about my longest trip in 2006 is still unfinished, so I figured I could allow the salt air to heal my failing lungs and attempt to finish my book on the same trip.

After landing at the airport in Faro, I packed my bicycle and luggage into a taxi and went to the nearest campsite in Quarteira. After setting up my tent, and putting my bike back together, I rode into the town just in time for the sunset. Breathtaking!

Ich wüsste dass ich irgendwann wieder in Portugal landen würde. Nachdem ich einige Probleme mit meinen Lungen hatte, habe ich entschieden zwei Sachen auf einmal zu tun. Das Buch über meine längste Reise in 2006 schreibe ich weiter und gleichzeitig, haben meine kranke Lungen eine Chance wieder in Ordnung zu kommen.

Nachdem ich auf dem Flughafen in Faro landete, packte ich mein Fahrrad und Gepäck in einen Taxi und bin zum ersten Campingplatz gefahren, und zwar in Quarteira. Nachdem ich mein Zelt aufgebaut hatte und mein Rad wieder zusammen gebaut hatte, bin ich in die Stadt gefahren -- gerade rechtzeitig um den Sonnenuntergang zu sehen. Herrlich!

Meine Wenigkeit steht links unter dem Olivenbaum im Quarteira Campingplatz. Das Buch heisst “Der Schwarm”, ein Weihnachtsgeschenk von meiner Frau, Angela. Spannend! Unten ist der Strandpromenade in Quarteira - etwa 5 Minuten auf dem Rad vom Campingplatz entfernt.

After a few days of getting to know the local area, I rode the bicycle to Albufeira - a city built on the cliffs - about 20 kilometers west of Quarteira. Quite honestly, I don’t think I would build anything on those cliffs; they didn’t appear to me to be very stable.

Although the beach here is empty, several people went swimming while I was there. Not for me! The water temperature was only 16 Celsius.

Nach ein paar Tagen hatte ich Quarteira ziemlich gut kennengelernt und bin nach Albufeira gefahren - etwa 20 Kilometer entfernt. Wie man hier sieht, ist Albufeira auf Klippen gebaut. Ganz ehrlich gesagt würde ich dort nichts bauen; so stabil fand ich die Klippen nicht.

Obwohl der Strand hier leer ist, haben einige Leute an dem Tag gebadet. Nichts für mich. Das Wasser ist nur 16 Grad.

Beach volleyball - Portuguese Style!

If you ever wondered why such a tiny country such as Portugal does so well in the soccer championships, this explains it. There were 8 teams on this beach playing volleyball -- with their FEET and HEADS. No one ever touched the ball with their hands. As you can see, the net here is placed just above the waist - low enough to kick a ball over it. Amazing!

Wenn Du Dich jemals gewundert hast, warum so ein kleines Land wie Portugal so gut im Fussball ist, findet man auf diesem Foto den Grund dafür. Es gab 8 Mannschaften auf diesem Strand, die Volleyball gespielt haben -- nur mit Fuß und Kopf. Niemand hat den Ball mit den Händen berührt. Wie man hier sieht, ist der Netz gerade über die Gürtellinie plaziert - gerade niedrig genug, um einen Ball darüber zu kicken. Unglaublich!

Orangen sind reif auf den Bäumen und kosten nur 1,50€ für 5 kg.

12 January - After getting used to the climate for a week in Quarteira, I decided to hit the road and headed east toward Spain. This is the church at the town square in Faro.

You guessed it!, Tthose are storks on the bell towers!

Nach einer Woche in Quarteira, hatte ich entschieden Richtung Spanien zu fahren. Diese Kirche ist im Zentrum von Faro.

Ja, Du hast recht! Das sind Störche auf den Kirchturmen.

Monte Gordo Camping
4.45 Euros per night

17 January - When I arrived in Monte Gordo, Marlene und Jan from Holland met me just inside the gate and offered me a glass of wine. For two hours, before I put up my tent, we sat and enjoyed a long discussion together with their friends, Bert and Rit, also from Holland. Two days later, I left for Spain and when I returned, they greeted me again with warm hospitality, a cup of coffee and some crackers and cheese. Jan is also a bike touring enthusiast and has made several trips in France and Spain on his bicycle.

Als ich in Monte Gordo ankam, Marlene und Jan aus Holland haben mich empfangen und mir ein Glas Wein angeboten. Zwei Stunden lang, auch bevor ich mein Zelt aufgebaut hatte, haben wir zusammen mit ihren Freunden Bert und Rit, alles mögliche diskutiert. Zwei Tage später bin ich nach Spanien abgereist und als ich wieder aus Spanien zurück war, haben sich mich wieder empfangen mit einer Tasse Kaffee und Käse auf Crackers. Jan ist auch ein Radwanderer der mehrere Touren in Frankreich und Spanien gemacht hat.

Nap Time - Dogs on the street are a common sight. Since they are never on a leash or penned up, they have no interest in bicycles. On the right is a napper on the train to Lagos, one week later. I wanted to see what it is like to ride the trains in Portugal. If you take a bike on the train, it costs nothing extra, but don’t expect any help from the train personnel getting your bike into the baggage compartment which has a high door.

Kleines Nickerchen - Hunde auf den Strassen ist normal in Portugal. Weil sie nie auf der Leine oder eingeschlossen sind haben sie keine Interesse an Radfahrer. Rechts schläft ein Man auf dem Zug eine Woche später. Das Fahrrad auf dem Zug mitzunehmen kostet nichts extra, aber Hilfe bekommst Du keins und die Tür zum Gepäckwagen ist hoch.
