This 800-kilometer long bike trip began where the Danube River is blue - in Ulm, Germany, which boasts of the tallest church tower in the world.

On the way to Regensburg, I crossed over the Danube several times. Each bridge was different and was adorned with one or more saints that blessed the travelers on their journey.

Auf dem Weg nach Regensburg habe ich die Donau mehrmals überquert. Jede Brücke war anders und wurde mit einem Heiligen geschmückt, der die Reisende auf dem Weg gesegnet haben.

In the early morning, the river was teeming with ducks, swans, and other wildlife searching for breakfast.

Früh am Morgen waren viele Enten, Schwäne und andere Tiere auf dem Fluss, die gefrühstückt haben.

In Staubing, the bike trail ended and I was forced to take a ferry through the deepest section of the Danube River. As you can see in this photograph, both sides of the river are lined with high cliffs. The ferry ride ended in Kehlheim -- about 5 kilometers downstream where the Altmühl River flows into the Danube.

In Staubing endet der Radweg. Daher musste ich auf einer Fähre die tiefste Stelle der Donau überqueren. Wie man sehen kann sind hier hohe Klippen auf beiden Seiten der Donau. Die Fähre endet in Kehlheim, circa 5 Kilometer flussabwärts, wo der Altmühl in die Donau hinein fliesst.

When I arrived in Kehlheim, the rain began to fall incessantly and I put up my tent during a lull in the storm around 11 a.m. in a small town called Poikam. All day long, the storm raged and dumped tons of water onto my tent. I went to sleep and enjoyed a long nap. After the nap, the storm had passed and the Danube became calm and smooth as glass.

Als ich in Kehlheim ankam, fing es an dauerhaft zu regnen. Ich bin bis Poikam weitergefahren, und als der Regen eine 30minutige Pause machte, habe ich mein Zelt aufgebaut. Den ganzen Tag tobte der Sturm und goss tonnenweise Wasser auf mein Zelt. In dem Zelt bin ich einfach eingeschlafen. Als ich aufwachte war der Sturm vorbei, und die Donau war glatt wie ein Spiegel. 

The next morning, I made my way down the Danube past Regensburg to a place called Walhalla, a structure built by King Ludwig I that resembles the Parthenon in Greece. Valhalla, in Nordic Mythology, was the “hall of the slain” for the gods of the north. Legend has it, that those who were slain in battle that made it back to Valhalla were brought back to life again.

Am nächsten Morgen bin ich an der Donau an Regensburg vorbei nach Walhalla gefahren. Walhalla wurde von König Ludwig I gebaut und sieht dem Parthenon in Griechenland ähnlich. In Nordische Mythologie, Walhalla war die “Halle der Töteten” für die nordische Götter. Der Legende nach, alle die im Kampf getötet wurden, die es geschafft haben nach Valhalla zu kommen, wieder lebendig gemacht wurden.

The walls of Walhalla are lined with about 200 busts of notable Germanic figures.

Bad Abbach at 6:22 a.m. In the early morning the mist hovers over the rivers and lakes until the sun can burn it off. Very few people experience this beautiful sight.

The Steinerne Brücke -- the Stone Bridge -- is a landmark in Regensburg. It is the main bridge that crosses the Danube and a gathering place for many. As in most cities in Germany, the Cathedral on the south side of the bridge marks the center of the city.

Die Steinerne Brücke ist ein Wahrzeichen in Regensburg. Sie ist die Hauptbrücke, die die Donau überquert und auch ein Treffpunkt für viele. Wie in vielen Städten in Deutschland, der Dom auf der Südseite der Brücke ist die Stadtmitte.

Rudi Wandersleb, second cousin to my wife, joined me in Regensburg to travel the length of the Altmühl. Behind him in this photograph is the Weihungshalle, also built by King Ludwig of Bavaria.

Rudi Wandersleb, Cousin meiner Frau, hat mich in Regensburg getroffen, um an der Altmühl mitzuradeln. Hinter ihm in diesem Foto ist die Weihungshalle, auch von König Ludwig von Bayern gebaut.

From the Altmühl River bike trail, I could only photograph part of the longest wooden bridge in the world. This bridge is located about 5 miles northwest of Kehlheim.

Von dem Altmühl Radweg aus, konnte ich nur ein Teil von der längsten Holzbrücke der Welt photographieren. Diese Brücke befindet sich circa 8 km Nordwest von Kehlheim.

The Altmühl River flows through a wide valley with limestone cliffs on both sides. Rudi is pointing to the sunburn on his knee in this photograph. On the third day, the sun was rentless at nearly 90 degrees.

Der Altmühl fliesst durch einen weiten Tal mit Kalkstein Klippen auf beiden Seiten. Rudi zeigt auf seinen Sonnenbrand auf seinem Knie in diesem Foto. Am dritten war die Sonne unaustehlich bei 32 grad.

The only night I didn’t sleep in a tent, I enjoyed a good breakfast with Rudi in Herrieden at the home of the Stadelmann family.

Nach der einzigen Nach, wo ich nicht im Zelt geschlafen hatte, habe ich einen guten Frühstück mit Rudi genossen. Hier waren wir in Herrieden bei der Stadelmann Familie.

Rothenburg on the Tauber River. This is the most photographed city in Germany -- primarily because it has kept it’s medieval flavour for several centuries.
